Examples of wrong set piercings and piercing complications

Piercing Complications

Piercing complications are not uncommon! There can be problems, especially with certain piercings. We have seen many bad piercings, some of which were grotesquely wrong and never healed due to their wrong position, as well as correctly done piercings that led to complications for no other reason. We photographed part of it. The shown examples of incorrectly pierced piercings are NOT from us, but were pierced in other studios.

The most common reason why there are complications during healing or constant inflammation even after a long wait is wrong set piercings.

The puncture is not where it should be. As a result, the tissue cannot calm down, and if there is mechanical unrest, the body tries to “eject” the parts.

We’ve seen a lot of badly done piercings from other studios, not just somewhere on vacation, but also from here in Switzerland. Among the so-called piercers there are many people who really don’t understand much about it. After a weekend course and after piercing a few colleagues, they present themselves as professional piercers.

The risk that the part is badly done with 50-franc bait offers is high.

Other reasons are the use of wrong care products. Merfen is one of the main offenders. Long-term disinfection with Merfen leads to toxic contact inflammation from the agent itself, the piercing never heals and looks bad.

Even piercings that have been done correctly (including those made by us) can cause problems if an infection settles in. Fortunately, but rarely.

Piercings that are in mechanically stressed areas usually also cause problems. My favorite nonsense is the dermal on the hand between thumb and forefinger. We warn explicitly, but it’s no use…if women have their minds set on something, it has to be…

Wrong piercings:

Nipple:

Nipple piercings from other studios. Classically wrong: too deep, too high, etc. In particular, piercings that go through the areola never heal properly. Piercings that are too high somewhere through the nipple tend to grow out. Last picture after removing a crooked piercing.

Example of incorrectly pierced inverted nipple piercings

Pictures of grotesquely incorrectly pierced piercings (much too far out through the mamillary areola, studio in Freiburg/D) on a young woman with strong central inverted crater nipples that never healed and, because they were pierced so incorrectly, had no effect on the inverted nipples.

Correction by us with good result.

Nasal Septum:

Pricking the nasal septum correctly is challenging. Here’s an example of how the piercing was set too low and too far down – through the thick cartilaginous part. Doesn’t heal forever, can’t be flipped up to hide. In the second picture, the piercing was inserted eccentrically and looks very bad. We always place the nasal septa in such a way that they go through the thin, non-cartilaginous part of the nasal septum, so that the puncture channel is perpendicular and parallel to the face in both planes, and that the rings can be folded up if you want to hide them.

Tragus:

An example of a tragus piercing where you can still see the sting: much too far out and badly pierced. We have already marked the new stitch point with the black dot.

Lip Frenulum

Common mistake: lip frenulum piercing that is too high, the piercing then lies more in the “gum” than in the lip frenulum.

Tongue:

Slanted tongue piercing. Stitching tongues straight is not that easy. It takes a lot of experience to prick them straight.

Belly button:

Example of a scarred navel, where the first navel piercing was not pierced deep enough (a classic mistake made by many piercers), the piercing grew out within 6 months and left an ugly scar. Here the customer still wants a new one, the markings for piercing are already there.

PA (Prince Albert):

Another example of piercings made by amateur piercers from other studios that are grossly incorrect: They come out somewhere in the middle of the glans. Bottom hole point completely wrong! Piercing ring too thin and wrong! A thick ring has to go in here right from the start. We start at least with 3 mm.

Complications:

Granuloma (proud flesh, pyogenic granuloma, hypertrophic tissue, wild flesh):

Here are examples of ear piercings where people have developed thick growths in these cases. Ear cartilage is delicate. Here, too, these nodules should recede after they have completely healed and calmed down. Or we can treat them.

Here is an example of a navel with overshooting wound healing (wild flesh), mostly at the lower sting site. These nodules generally resolve on their own as healing progresses. In this case, low-quality jewelry bought somewhere was used, which released metal and led to inflammation and graying of the nodule. We can get rid of these nodules if they don’t go away on their own.

Here on the labiae also developed wild meat. Outer labia can sometimes be tricky too. The picture before and after treatment with intracutaneous cortisone injection. On the one hand complete success, on the other improvement.

Outgrow:

A problem with surface bars, such as those used on the ear, décolleté, neck, or on the ear: these sometimes have a tendency to grow out. If that happens, take it out first before the skin breaks through, like in this case! This gives ugly scars, which can be avoided by removing them beforehand.

Microdermal Complications 1:

Microdermals are piercings that have a higher rate of complications than others. They only have one exit from the skin instead of two like other piercings. Adjacent is an inflamed dermal, with a boil of pus underneath. Don’t let it get that far, come to us first! In an early stage of inflammation we can usually save them, in this case we took out this dermal and cut open the abscess.

Microdermal Complications 2:

Here is a dermal that is already protruding from the skin. Consequence of getting stuck, or a chronic Inflammation where the dermal is pushed out of the body and grows out. Unable to save, was taken out. After the area had healed and calmed down, we inserted a new dermal 6 weeks later with good results.
